IMPORTANCE OF EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION AS AN INDUSTRIAL TOOL AND AN EMOTIONAL AND SOCIAL MATTER WHICH STRENGTHENS RELATIONSHIPS AT SEA
Abstract
When working in a global shipping company that has operations and seafarers around the world, you need some ingredients of culture-general communication competence such as motivation, tolerance for ambiguity, open-mindedness and knowledge and skill. Current-day seafarers are expected to be well-trained and of good quality. They thus depend on their training to underpin their profession. The resulting challenge for MET institutions is how to achieve the outcomes and, more importantly, how to assess that seafarers are fit for service on board. Consequently, in terms of communication, high levels of Maritime English must be reinforced. The ability to speak and understand General English and to use the IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP) is not sufficient. The ability to transfer information, to give feedback, to possess cultural awareness and to master communication skills also plays a key role.
“Effective communication” as stated in STCW78, as amended, constitutes a critical message which should be adopted by Maritime English teachers and trainers to broaden and underscore their activities. Thus Maritime English trainers provide the “robust foundation” needed for a true safety culture and effective training lies at the core of developing seafarers’ quality, competence and fitness for purpose.
